National Ornamental Metal Museum

art craft inspiration memphis

When I moved back to Memphis almost exactly one year ago I made a list of places I wanted to go. On that list was the National Ornamental Metal Museum - Although it is so close to where I live I could throw a rock and hit it, I just made it for the first time last weekend. My motivation for going that particular day was the hands on event of casting natural objects in resin. I've been collecting feathers the last year or so (even though I was taught never to pick them up as a child) and figured resin would be a better presentation than a dusty old frame. Turns out I was right.

The ladies that were running the event were helpful and knowledgeable, and I'm very happy I went. They gave me a little booklet with the events coming up at the museum (including late hours with cocktails and food trucks called Whet Thursdays) and I'm sure I'll be back. After my pieces were finished, I walked the gardens and took some photos, posted below. I should've gone sooner, so I highly recommend you go the next time you're looking for a low-impact adventure.

All of these parts making up the gate are different. See these detail shots...
