Most people (well, most Memphians) probably know that the main attraction in Whitehaven is Graceland. While this is true (and you can read all about Graceland in my next post), there are certainly other things to do there besides go to the home of Elvis Presley. I grew up going to Whitehaven because my grandparents lived on Elvis Presley Blvd, directly across from the Dodge's Store. After my dad's parents left Drew, Mississippi where my grandfather was the dentist at Parchman (yes, the penitentiary) they moved to Memphis and he opened up his dental practice in the basement of his home.
Last week I embarked on a new adventure: trying out Marlowe's restaurant and playing golf at the Links at Whitehaven.
Love the painted pink pig Airstream trailer parked outside...
but I love the pink Marlowe's limousine even more.
Elvis is EVERYWHERE inside, as he should be.
Love the mixed drink selection, and the menu is long and not just limited to BBQ. It's the kind of place where a salad will even give you a heart attack, but that's no reason not to go. A friend had the corn fritters as his side. SO GOOD.
On to the links. The course is really beautiful. It was once the Whitehaven Country Club, but the city of Memphis has been running it for about 10 years. I didn't get more pictures of the action. It wasn't necessary; I lost a ton of balls in the water and stopped keeping score near the end. That's all you need to know. I will be back for sure, on both accounts.
*update - I went to the course a second time as part of the city's initiative to promote the sport to women, and I won a putting contest! I got a free Puma golf shirt. No one is more surprised than I am that I would win a contest for the closest putt out of about 25 people. Putting is not usually my strong point...but I guess really nothing is yet with golf. For more information about the Whitehaven golf course, visit this link http://www.memphistn.gov/Government/ParksNeighborhoods/GolfCourses/LinksatWhitehaven.aspx
